Photographing Birds of Prey

Professional wildlife photographer Andy Langley offers expert tips and advice for capturing photos of birds of prey in the wild. With wild barn owls as his subject, Langley suggests to pick the most predictable hunting times during the day and comments that just before breeding season, the wild barn owls have a tendency to hunt in the daytime. He also notes that because the owls need to eat four to five small animals per day, there should be plenty of opportunities to capture multiple images.

Professional tips for capturing images of wild birds of prey include using a long telephoto lens set to its maximum aperture opening, using maximum shutter speed, using a tripod with a quick release camera mount, and choosing a vantage point that takes advantage of the fact that birds tend to fly into the wind so that they can hover over their prey.
